How ている works: ongoing actions, habits and resulting states

ている is the te-form plus いる (“to be”), and it conjugates like the ichidan verb いる: casual ている・ていない・ていた・ていなかった, polite ています・ていません・ていました・ていませんでした. Every verb with a conjugation table lists all eight.

  • Ongoing action

Something that is happening right now.

    • 食べている (たべている) — is eating
    • 今、本を読んでいる。 (いま、ほんをよんでいる。) — I'm reading a book right now.
  • Habitual action

Something repeated over a period of time.

    • 毎朝走っている。 (まいあさはしっている。) — I run every morning.
    • 毎日日本語を勉強している。 (まいにちにほんごをべんきょうしている。) — I study Japanese every day.
  • Resulting state

A change happened and its result still holds, so English usually says “is married” rather than “is marrying”.

    • 結婚している (けっこんしている) — is married
    • 住んでいる (すんでいる) — lives (in a place)
    • 持っている (もっている) — has / is holding
    • 知っている (しっている) — knows
    • 着ている (きている) — is wearing
    • 行っている (いっている) — has gone and is there
    • 来ている (きている) — has come and is here
    • 彼は結婚している。 (かれはけっこんしている。) — He is married.
  • With 行く・来る, ている usually describes a resulting state rather than an action in progress: the person has gone (or come) and is still there (or here).
  • The negative of 知っている is 知らない (polite: 知りません), not 知っていない.
  • With action verbs, ていない usually means “has not done it (yet)”, not “is not doing it”: まだ食べていない = “I haven't eaten yet.” With resulting-state verbs it is just the negative state: 結婚していない = “is not married”.
  • In casual speech the い is often dropped: 食べてる, 読んでる. The tables show the full forms.
  • Verbs that already describe a state, such as ある・いる・要る, rarely take ている, and できる in the sense “can” does not; their cards carry a note.
