N5

い-adjectives + です

Xは 〜いです

Meaning

Describes X using an い-adjective, in the polite present tense.

Explanation

い-adjectives (ending in い, like 高い or 大きい) already carry their own present-tense ending, so です here just adds politeness - it doesn't act as a copula the way it does after a noun. To negate, drop the final い and add くないです, and for the past, くなかったです (or the slightly more formal くありませんでした).

Formation

Noun + は + い-adjective + です

Examples

  • この本は面白いです。

    このほんはおもしろいです。

  • 今日は暑くないです。

    きょうはあつくないです。

    Today isn't hot.
