N5

か - turning a statement into a question

〜か。

Meaning

Added to the end of a sentence to turn it into a yes/no or open question.

Explanation

Adding か to the end of a plain statement turns it into a question, without needing to change word order the way English does. In polite speech, か often takes the place of a rising question intonation, though a question mark is still commonly written for clarity.

Formation

Sentence (polite form) + か

Examples

  • 田中さんは学生ですか。

    たなかさんはがくせいですか。

    Is Mr. Tanaka a student?

  • 何を食べますか。

    なにをたべますか。

    What will you eat?
