N5

から - because, since (giving a reason)

〜から、〜

Meaning

Marks the reason for what follows; "because X, Y."

Explanation

Attached directly to the end of a plain or polite sentence, から gives the reason for the clause that follows - the reason always comes first, then から, then the result. Unlike verb and adjective endings, から doesn't change anything about the sentence it attaches to; it just tacks on the end. Don't confuse this から with the から that means "from" after a place or time (日本から, "from Japan") - that one attaches to a single noun, this one attaches to a whole sentence.

Formation

Sentence (plain or polite form) + から、+ Result

Examples

  • 時間がないから、急いでください。

    じかんがないから、いそいでください。

Since there's no time, please hurry.

  • 疲れましたから、少し休みます。

    つかれましたから、すこしやすみます。

    Since I'm tired, I'll rest a little.
