N4

たり〜たりします - doing things like ~ and ~

〜たり〜たりします

Meaning

Lists a couple of representative actions out of a larger, unstated set.

Explanation

Attaching たり to a verb's past-tense (た-form) stem and repeating the pattern for a second verb lists a few example actions without claiming they're the only things done, or the order they happened in - similar in spirit to や for nouns. します at the end carries the actual tense.

Formation

Verb (た-form) + り + Verb (た-form) + り + します

Examples

  • 週末は本を読んだり、映画を見たりします。

    しゅうまつはほんをよんだり、えいがをみたりします。

On weekends I do things like read books and watch movies.

  • 公園で走ったり、歌ったりしました。

    こうえんではしったり、うたったりしました。

At the park we did things like run and sing.
