How Much Does a Trip from Portugal to Japan Cost?

A trip from Portugal to Japan has two very different kinds of cost: the flight, which you pay once and which depends mostly on the date, and the days on the ground, which depend on how you travel. This guide adds them together for one adult on a two-week trip, in euros, for three styles: budget, mid-range and higher spend. It uses ranges and states every assumption, because there is no single universal price. It does not repeat our deeper guides on daily spending, flight times, mobile data, insurance, trains and cards; we link to them where they go further. All figures are planning estimates, checked on 21 October 2026, and not quotes.

The short answer

For 14 days and 13 nights, one adult flying from Lisbon or Porto with one stop, our planning totals are about €1,888 for a budget trip, about €3,503 for a mid-range trip and about €8,352 for a higher-spend trip. The ranges in the last column are the total plus or minus 15 per cent, rounded to the nearest €50, to reflect that flights, hotels and the exchange rate move.

Higher spend€1,500€5,852€240€760€8,352€7,100 - €9,600

Assumptions behind the numbers

  • Exchange rate: we use 1 EUR = ¥170 as a round planning rate. It is an assumption, not today's rate, and the real rate moves from week to week.
  • Daily spending: the yen figures from our daily budget guide, ¥7,800, ¥22,000 and ¥70,000 all-in per day, excluding flights. We use the same per-category amounts and apply them to 14 days of spending and 13 nights of accommodation.
  • Flights: a return fare from Lisbon or Porto with one stop in economy, except the higher-spend style, where we assume a premium economy or flexible fare. These are estimates from fare searches, not quotes.
  • One-offs: travel insurance, an eSIM, a few pre-trip purchases and Shinkansen tickets, each shown as its own line because they do not scale with the number of days.
  • Buffer: 10 per cent of the subtotal, rounded to the nearest €10, for things nobody plans for.
  • One adult, sharing nothing. Two people in one room halve the bed cost per person, which can lower the accommodation lines noticeably.

Use our currency converter to turn any yen figure into euros at the rate of the day. If the rate is better or worse than our planning rate, the yen lines scale in proportion and the flight and euro-priced lines do not.

Flights from Lisbon and Porto

The flight is usually the biggest single line. There is no scheduled non-stop flight between Portugal and Japan that we could find, so a fare means one stop. On 21 October 2026 we read the Kayak fare pages for Lisbon to Tokyo and Porto to Tokyo. They are search-engine summaries of recent searches, not airline price lists, and they carry no calendar date, so treat the figures below as a range from fare searches and not as a quote. A fare for your own dates can be higher or lower.

Return fares to Tokyo shown on Kayak, in euros, read on 21 October 2026

Porto€999 to €1,379about €1,190January, €961August, €1,418€1,378

Sources read: the Kayak pages for Lisbon to Tokyo flights and Porto to Tokyo flights. The Lisbon page also showed a recent cheapest offer of €955 with British Airways, and the Porto page said booking about 17 weeks ahead and staying flexible on dates could save roughly 11 per cent and up to 18 per cent. We tried Skyscanner and Google Flights too, and neither gave usable figures. For the journey itself, including routings and total hours, read how long it takes to travel from Portugal to Japan.

Our planning flight lines are €950 for budget, €1,150 for mid-range and €1,500 for higher spend. The budget figure sits just below the typical range on both pages (close to the cheapest January medians and the €955 offer), and the mid-range figure sits inside both ranges, near the average. The higher figure is our own estimate for premium economy or a flexible fare; we did not find a source for premium prices, so check it.

Seasonal multipliers for flights and hotels

Season moves two lines at once. For flights, the monthly medians above show a spread of roughly 1.5 times between the cheapest month (January) and the priciest (March from Lisbon, August from Porto). For hotels we have no measured multiplier, so the hotel column is our own estimate and should be checked against real room prices for your dates.

Each euro line is a yen amount divided by 170 and rounded to the nearest euro, and every total is the sum of the rounded lines, so converting a yen total in one go can differ by a euro or two. The insurance, eSIM and pre-trip lines are our own planning estimates: a two-week policy might cost anywhere from about €30 to €150 depending on cover, and an eSIM for 14 days from about €10 to €35 depending on data. We did not find prices we could cite for either, so treat the ranges as estimates and check each provider on the day you buy. If your passport needs renewing, add the fee; we could not open the Portuguese government's price page today, so check it there.

Read why cover matters and what to look for in our travel insurance guide, and compare ways to get online in our guide to internet and mobile data in Japan or, for eSIM specifically, how to choose and set up an eSIM from Portugal.

A worked 14-day mid-range example

Here is the mid-range trip in both currencies: a return flight from Lisbon, 13 nights in business hotels, a return Shinkansen trip from Tokyo to Kyoto and the usual extras. The yen column uses the daily amounts from our daily budget guide.

Mid-range, 14 days, in yen and euros at 1 EUR = ¥170

TotalSubtotal plus buffer-€3,503

That is about €3,503 for the whole trip, or about €250 per day averaged over 14 days, flight included. The yen lines alone come to ¥323,300, which is about €1,903 at our planning rate; if the real rate is nearer ¥160 or ¥180, redo that part in the converter.

The same trip in peak season

To show what season does, here is the same mid-range trip with flights multiplied by 1.3 (about the gap between the peak medians and the 12-month average on the fare pages) and hotels by 1.4 (our estimate).

Mid-range trip, normal planning figures against a peak-season scenario, in euros
ItemPlanningPeak scenario
Flights€1,150€1,495
Accommodation€918€1,285
Everything else€1,115€1,115
Subtotal€3,183€3,895
Buffer, 10%€320€390
Total€3,503€4,285

The peak scenario adds about €782 to the same trip, nearly all of it from the flight and the bed. Nothing about the days on the ground changed.

What makes the biggest difference

  • Flight timing: the same flight can cost roughly half as much again in a peak month as in January. Booking earlier and staying flexible on days helped on the fare pages we read; Monday departures were cheaper than Saturdays on the Porto page.
  • Hotel location and season: a station 15 to 20 minutes out is often cheaper than the centre, and a quiet week can cost far less than the same room at cherry blossom time. This is the largest line after the flight, so it is worth a careful search.
  • Shinkansen use: one Tokyo to Kyoto return is about ¥27,300, roughly €161, so it adds up if you move city every few days. Fewer bases and more days in each is cheaper and more relaxing.
  • Shopping discipline: the higher-spend style differs from the mid-range one mostly in shopping, meals and taxis. A set limit for gifts and souvenirs keeps the buffer for real surprises.
  • Travelling as a pair: sharing a room halves the bed cost per person, while the flight, insurance and eSIM do not shrink. Per-person totals fall, but not by half.

Before you add a Shinkansen leg, read whether the Shinkansen is worth the cost, which compares fares, passes and alternatives.

How Portuguese travellers typically pay

Most travellers from Portugal pay with a card for hotels, flights, trains and larger shops, and keep a cash float for small restaurants, temples, vending machines and places that do not take foreign cards. Our cash guide suggests about ¥3,000 to ¥6,000 in cash per person per day as a float, which is part of the daily budget above, not an extra. Always choose yen if a terminal offers to charge you in euros, because the exchange rate it applies is usually worse. Keep one backup card and tell your bank you are travelling.

Savings checklist

  • Compare fares for several departure days and both Lisbon and Porto before you pick the date.
  • Prefer January, February or June for flights and hotels if the weather suits you.
  • Book flights and rooms early, and check the cancellation rules before you pay.
  • Choose a business hotel or hostel a short train ride from the centre.
  • Share a room if you travel as a pair.
  • Base yourself in fewer cities, and book an early-bird Shinkansen fare only when your dates are fixed.
  • Use an IC card for trains and buses, and an eSIM installed at home instead of roaming.
  • Eat set lunches and convenience-store breakfasts, and keep the omakase dinner for one special night.
  • Compare insurance policies for cover, not only for price.
  • Set a souvenir limit before you leave and keep the 10% buffer untouched.

Official information

We could not fetch an official tourism-board, airline or government page with usable price information on 21 October 2026, so this guide cites no official source. The flight ranges come from the two Kayak fare pages linked above, which are not official sources, and every other figure is our own planning estimate or comes from our related guides. Prices, taxes and the exchange rate change, so check each fare, room and policy on the booking page before you pay.
